The AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan was designed by students for students to take care of expenses not covered by basic health care plans, such as British Columbia’s Medical Services Plan (MSP), equivalent provincial health care plans, and private basic plans. The comprehensive Plan covers prescription drugs, dental care, psychologist visits, travel health coverage, vision care, and much more.

The Change-of-Coverage Period is the period at the beginning of the term when you can either opt-in/out or enroll your spouse and/or dependents. These dates are strict, and no exceptions can be made.
If you start school in Term 1, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from August 21 to September 25, 2023 for coverage from Sept 1, 2023 – Aug 31, 2024
If you’re a new intake student starting in Term 2, the Change-of-Coverage Period is from Jan 3, 2023 – Jan 24, 2024 for coverage from Jan 1, 2024- Aug 31, 2024.
If you’re a new May intake Summer student, please enroll yourself into the plan during May 3, 2024 – May 17, 2024 for coverage from May 1, 2023- Aug 31, 2023.
All AMS and GSS members (excluding those taking distance education courses only) are automatically enrolled, including full-time and part-time students, international students, and those auditing a course. If you are covered, the cost of the Plan is part of your student fees and no further action is required.
If you have permanently opted out of the plan before and wish to opt-back in, please self enrol with Studentcare within the Change-of-Coverage period. No need to fill out the Opt-in form below.
Exceptions: Some students are not automatically covered by the Plan, but may be eligible to enrol into the plan by filling out the AMS Fee Opt-in form during the Change of Coverage Period. If you wish to opt IN to the Health and Dental Plan, you MUST opt in to all other AMS fees.
Third/Fourth year MD Students are exempt from AMS fees: Opt-in through your faculty
New May intake summer students: You are not automatically covered but may be eligible to enroll through the Studentcare coverage manager. Please consult the “Enroll Yourself Now” page during the Change of Coverage period if this applies to you.
Enroll your dependents: You can also enroll your spouse and/or dependent children by completing the couple/family enrolment process outlined in the Couples & Family Enrolments section.
Opt-out: Students that are covered by an equivalent Health and Dental plan (ex. parent’s or spouse’s employee benefit plan, or a plan provided by your band council or through Health Canada) can opt-out. You can only opt-out during the designated Change of Coverage Period. Please note that the BC MSP coverage alone is not an equivalent to the AMS/GSS Health and Dental Plan. For a more efficient reimbursement process, register and submit your claims on the Pacific Blue Cross (PBC) website. Your policy number is 43979 (health, travel, and dental), and your ID number is your student number.
If you’re covered by another plan, you can combine this plan with the AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan to maximize your overall coverage and eliminate out-of-pocket costs.

Open to all UBC students experiencing financial hardship. Full reimbursement subsidy of the Health & Dental Plan fee is available on a needs basis from the AMS and GSS through the AMS/GSS Health Plan Premium Assistance Fund.
There are no subsidies available for the Summer terms.
