About Us
A UBC science club working alongside the Canadian Blood Services to diversify and expand Canada's Stem Cell Donor and Blood Donor Registry. Canada's Stem Cell Registry is used to find a genetic match for patients who require stem-cell transplants. The nature of such transplants requires that donors are genetically matched to the patient to a very high degree. However, fewer than 25% of patients have a genetic match in their families, and thus, most rely on strangers as a match. As a club, we work towards increasing awareness across campus about the current lack of stem cell donors, and we recruit undergraduate students to register as potential donors. In addition, our club also actively encourages UBC students to donate blood. The demand for blood is huge- approximately every 60 seconds, someone in Canada is in need. We support our national blood supply by guiding students through the blood donation process: sharing educational and promotional material as well as answering any relevant questions that may come up.
