UBC Backgammon Club

With over 5000 years of history, Backgammon holds the status for one of the oldest board games and serves as the rudimentary foundation for many subsequent leisurely activities. However, despite its revival in the past decade, and an exponential interest within the current generation, there continues to be a lack of appreciation for backgammon which is most notably highlighted with its absence in the UBC student body. A revived interest in the game has lured more individuals into backgammon and invited many to participate in competitions, one that has significantly expanded the gameÔÇÖs fan base. UBCÔÇÖs available platform for students of all cultures and backgrounds could enable the gathering of enthusiasts and enjoyment of this fun, exhilarating, and exciting game. Recent advancements of the game have raised the attention of many computer scientists and mathematicians to challenge and research the gameÔÇÖs hidden secrets and develop ideas and mechanisms in order to be capable of defeating the worldÔÇÖs best players with a well calculated and rational technique. This club would allow the bright minds that study at UBC to learn, study, and further enhance these technical advancements using their post-secondary learnings in a team-oriented environment.

With various backgammon competitions taking place across the lower mainland and a lack of proper professional training, this club can serve as a stepping stone for individuals to learn the game fundamentally and apply those learning in various experiences. Although the AMS currently offers a myriad of Clubs, varying from charitable work to participating in sport teams, there is a lack of focus on the members own cognitive growth and advanced problem-solving skills. With the help of AMS, the backgammon club can take place in a safe and appropriate environment, where individuals are given the opportunity to express freely and collaborate with others to learn, work on their weaknesses and pave the way towards the zenith. In such a supportive and encompassing society, the AMS will allow this club to reach out and allow students to transcend beyond their university life and improve their interpersonal skills. A potential affiliation will allow this club to help students relieve their stress, enhance their concentration abilities and exercise their creativity and strategic thinking.
