About Us

UBC's International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team is a synthetic biology research team, run entirely by students and supervised by postgrads and professors. We consist of passionate and innovative students that compete in a world-renowned competition, where teams from 400 universities worldwide spend a year working on a groundbreaking synthetic biology project, showcased in Boston.  iGEM projects are not only biology-based, but are multi-faceted through science, coding, business, design, engineering, and much more. If you are interested in putting the skills you are learning in university to practice, meeting motivated students from UBC and across the globe, and working at the cutting edge of biotechnology, then iGEM is definitely for you.

Team rotation

Each iGEM season begins in October, where we recruit new applicants that are driven and determined to drive the team forwards. From January to April of the following year, project ideation occurs in conjunction with seeking advice from experts in the field and planning our experimental methods. The summer is where the bulk of the laboratory work occurs, where we aim to have our final synthetic biology product finished by September to present at the annual iGEM Giant Jamboree, where over 400 undergraduate and graduate teams compete for the Grand Prize. As you can see, joining iGEM is no light time commitment, but the reward of creating a viable, genetically engineered product to treat a modern issue certainly pays off.

Join the 2021 team

Applications will be open for our 2021 team starting October! Get a head start by asking about the application process and research experience.

Network with experts in the microbiology and  engineering fields

Interviews and feedback are a large part of the research experience. Get the chance to speak with NASA engineers, epidemiologists and more.

Make genuine connections with like-minded, driven students

The core part of our team is made up of UBC undergraduates that range from first year to their last year.
