UBC Figure Skating Club Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UBC FSC?

We are a UBC student-run club under the AMS that aims to create a community of figure skaters and skating enthusiasts alike!

Can I join the UBC FSC?

Yes! Visit our page "How to Join" for more information!

Where do you skate?

UBC Recreation offers drop-in figure skating for both UBC students and the general public. These sessions are designed for figure skating, so you are free to jump and spin freely!

Do you need your own skates? Can I rent skates?

You need your own figure skates (not hockey skates) to participate on the UBC Recreation drop-in figure skating sessions. The only skate rentals are for the public skating drop-in sessions, where you will not be permitted to jump/spin/etc.

Where can I buy skates or get my skates sharpened?

Skater's Edge Figure Skating Boutique is a great option if you are looking to invest in a new pair of skates, get your skates aligned or sharpened, or purchase other related merchandise. If you are looking for used skates, sometimes local clubs will do used skate sales.

Do you offer skating lessons?

No, we currently do not offer private lessons. If you are looking for lessons near UBC, we recommend exploring the options provided by UBC Recreation. Our group classes are run on the drop-in sessions and are free for members, but they assume you have some prior skating background and are not designed for teaching people how to skate.

Do members get free admission to drop-in sessions?

No. We do not run the UBC Recreation drop-in figure skating sessions, therefore you are required to pay the fee every time you register for a session. It is currently $3 for UBC students and $6.50 for non-UBC skaters for 1 hour and 15 minutes of ice time.

I took lessons when I was younger, but haven't skated in a while....can I still join the club?

Of course! We have a large variety of talent in our club, so you don't need to be an active competitor to join! Just know that we do not offer lessons and will not be able to teach you how to skate if you have never skated before.

What is the AMS?

The AMS is the Alma Mater Society for UBC. It acts as the student union and provides services and support for UBC students.

The AMS Figure Skating Club at UBC acknowledges that we are situated and operate on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people.

The land the AMS Figure Skating Club at UBC is situated on has always been a place of learning for the Musqueam people, who for millennia have passed on their culture, history, and traditions from one generation to the next on this site. We are grateful to be able to further our club and our members on this land, and we hope to continue to honor the history of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people through respectful participation and involvement.
